The Oriental Brothers, a popular Igbo-style highlife group with roots in Owerri, was one of the most successful groups in Nigeria in the 1970s. They are known for their expressive instrumentation and literally powerful lyrics.
The Original Oriental Brothers International group consisted of five members: Godwin “Kabak” Opar, who was the leader of the group, leader Christogonus “Dr. Sir Warrior” Ezewuiro Obinna, Ferdinand “DanSatch” Chukwuemeka Opara, Livinus “Akwela” Alaribe and Fred “Ichita” Ahumaraeze who was the drummer.
According to a Nigerian magazine, the Eastern Brothers played a spiritual role in keeping many Igbos sane after the devastating civil war between Nigeria and Biafra. “They were the pride of a nation affected by the trauma of such a cruel war.”
