General Muhammad left for work on February 13, 1976, traveling down George Street as usual. His Mercedes Benz was moving slowly through the notorious Lagos traffic just after eight in the morning when some troops from an attempted coup led by Dimka appeared from a nearby gas station, ambushed the automobile, and killed Muhammad.

The only weapon that appeared to be protecting him was a handgun that his orderly was carrying, thus it was simple to kill him.
