People of the 70s should definitely know the name Sonny Okosun. For those who do not know the name Sonny Okosun, it can be said that he was one of the leading Nigerian musicians who dominated the musical waves of the 70s and 80s and was best known as the frontman of the band Ozzidi. In 1977, Sonny Okosun embarked on a national tour to promote one of his new songs called ”Papa’s Land”, which sold over 50,000 copies within three weeks of its release.
Sonny Okosun concluded his 10-theater national tour at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos with a big surprise for his fans. It was around 1pm when the head priest and leader of Africa’70, Fela Anikulapo Kuti entered the room, drawing uncontrollable applause from the music lovers.
Reports gathered from the 1977 edition of Sunday Punch stated: “Sonny Okosun was eager to help Fela Kuti on stage and a sound session ensued between Fela and the audience.”
Fela, whose performance was a big surprise for the audience, gave another pleasant surprise by bringing his silver saxophone on stage to introduce his latest musical achievements to the assembled audience. It was truly a rare and wonderful experience for the participants.
On the other hand, Sonny Okosun thrilled the audience with his impressive performance. A show that kept the audience in
suspense until the early hours of the morning.
