Yar’ Adua returned to Abuja under cover of darkness on February 24, 2010.Although it was unclear how he was doing, there were rumors that he was still receiving life support. During his illness, he received visits from a number of Nigerian political and religious leaders who assured him that he would get better.
On May 5, Yar’ Adua passed away at the Presidential Villa at Aso Rock. On May 6, there was an Islamic funeral in his Katsina hometown.
A seven-day period of mourning was declared by the Nigerian Federal Government. “Nigeria has lost the jewel on its crown and even the heavens mourn with our nation tonight,” stated acting president Goodluck Jonathan. Both as a country and as individuals, we prayed for Mr. President’s recovery. However, we find comfort in the knowledge that all life is given and taken by the Almighty.
“He was committed to creating lasting peace and prosperity within Nigeria’s own borders, and continuing that work will be an important part of honoring his legacy,” US President Barack Obama said in his condolence message.
