Aikhomu Augustus Receives National Honor in 1985

Aikhomu was born on October 20,1939, in Irrua- Ishan, Edo State. He had his education at Irrua Government School and later Yaba College of Technology, 1954 -1958 Royal Britannia Naval College; Long Gunnery Specialist Course, India, and the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, 1982.

Ehime, first son of former Admiral Augustus Aikhomu was among the 165 killed in Dana plane clash in Lagos which occurred on June 3, 2012Aïkhomu August; Nigerian naval officer who served as de facto vice president of Nigeria under Ibrahim Babangida’s military junta from 1986 to 1993. Aikhomu, former chief of staff, was the first naval officer promoted to admiral in sub-Saharan Africa.

He was the first signatory of the document that authorized the formation of the Interim National Government (ING) led by businessman Ernest Shonekan after the annulment of the presidential elections of June 12, 1993. After   Aikhomu’s death, he was praised by his former boss as “a solid man who paid attention to every detail of every task assigned to him and handled everything with a great sense of maturity.” “He received the national honor of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger GCON.
