Pictured in the 1960s at the University of Ibadan, a young Kenule Saro-Wiwa, better known as Ken Saro-Wiwa, is shown in his 20s acting in a theatrical play. Saro-Wiwa was developing his literary and activist talents during this crucial time in his life, which would later catapult him to worldwide renown. Originating in Ogoni in the Niger Delta, Saro-Wiwa was an ardent supporter of human and environmental rights in addition to being a talented writer.
One of Nigeria’s top universities, the University of Ibadan, was a major influence on his intellectual and artistic growth throughout his stay there.
This period also saw the emergence of Nigeria’s post-colonial literary movement, and Saro-Wiwa went on to play a significant role in the fight against the international oil firms’ exploitation of the Niger Delta’s resources.
