Nigerian National Honours – Full Meaning

The Nigerian National Honors is a series of honors presented annually to Nigerian and non-Nigerian citizens deemed eligible to receive the award. They were established under the National Honors Act no. 5 of 1964 to honor Nigerians and non-Nigerians who have contributed in one way or another to the development of the country. Below is a list of national honors in Nigeria and their significance.

  • GCFR – Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic
  • GCON – Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger
  • CFR – Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic
  • CON – Commander of the Order of the Niger
  • OFR – Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic
  • OON – Officer of the Order of the Niger
  • MFR – Member of the Order of the Federal Republic
  • MON – Member of the Order of the Niger

The GCFR and GCON are awarded to former Presidents and Vice Presidents of Nigeria, respectively, including former Nigerian military Heads of State and Chiefs of General Staff.
