Being the first Nigerian president to do so, Yar’Adua made public his May asset declaration on June 28, 2007. It said that he had ₦856,452,892 (US$5.8 million) in assets, of which ₦19 million ($0.1 million) belonged to his wife.
In addition, he possessed liabilities of ₦88,793,269.77 ($0.5 million).
His pre-election pledge was accomplished with this revelation, which aimed to deter corruption and serve as an example for other Nigerian leaders.
