Retitling of the Lagos Town Council to Local Government

The Lagos Town Council was established in 1950 as an administrative unit of Lagos under the new Local Government Act, an outgrowth of the Municipal Council created by a 1941 Ordinance. Oba Adele II of Lagos ran for President of the Lagos Municipal Council but lost.

Dr. Abubakir Ibiyinka Olorunnimbe. Olorunimbe was mayor of Lagos until the city council was dissolved after councilors made corruption allegations against him. Oba Adeniji Adele later resigned from the council because the mayor did not recognize his royal status at council meetings.

The council was reorganized in 1953 under Obafemi Awolowo, resulting in the abolition of the office of mayor and Oba becoming president for life. Subsequently, the council collapsed as Lagos was removed from the Western Region. In 1959 it was renamed Local Government.
