Rexton Rawlston Fernando Gordon, better known by his stage name Shabba Ranks, was a 26-year-old Jamaican performer who traveled to Nigeria in 1992 for the “Lekki Sun-Splash” event. Before the concert later in the day, he stopped by the Kalakuta Shrine to meet Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary Afrobeat artist. He was rather direct about the reason for his visit, of course. In a fit of youthful excitement, he informed Abami Eda right away that he had heard about his smoking heritage and had come to claim his right to brag about having outsmoked Fela.
As for the phrase, well, it goes, “If you do not understand your own system, it is not wise to go on a drinking or smoking challenge with another man.” The Ganja Kings, popularly referred to as Baba 70, took up the challenge, puffing and drawing their smokes while joking around.
It turns out that Shaba Ranks slept off after his blunt wrapper got bigger and bigger with each successive wrap. History claims the concert manager thrashed him, and when he woke up, he found out he had missed the performance the night before.
