Understanding the Concept of Legitimacy in Government

Many people believe that a government based on coercion (military rule) cannot find legitimacy. However, the military can enjoy legitimacy by implementing popular government policies. In a legal government, obedience is based not on fear of punishment but on loyalty to the sovereign and the state.

Factors that determine the legitimacy of the government

The following factors show how a government can be legitimate.

1.Free and fair elections: Elections are the most common method of appointing a government in a democratic country. When a government is formed after free and fair elections, it has the people’s mandate to govern it.

2. Good Governance – When the government exercises the administration of the state efficiently, effectively and in accordance with the constitution, that government is recognized by public opinion. In other words, people tend to recognize a government that meets the basic needs of the population, such as good roads, water, security, etc.

3. Good Leadership – A leader with good qualities and good character is supported and recognized by his people.

4. Economic Development – When the economic development of a country is large-scale, people will accept and support the government.

5.Mass Participation or Popular Participation: The more citizens participate in state affairs, the more the government is recognized and supported.

6. Customs and Traditions – Respect for the customs and traditions of a society can strengthen the legitimacy of the government.
