The richest woman in Nigeria and Africa, Folorunsho Alakija, is shown in a 1974 photo as a youthful, attractive 23-year-old. Alakija was born in Ikorodu, Lagos (formerly Western Region, British Nigeria) on July 15, 1951. Her father, L. A. Ogbara, had eight wives and fifty-two children total; Folorunsho’s mother was his first wife. She holds the positions of Executive Vice Chairman at Famfa Oil Limited and Group Managing Director at The Rose of Sharon Group.

The hardworking Tiv people, known as Tiv (TIIV) in Nigeria’s middle belt region, have a long history dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It is thought that they moved to their current site from the Congo basin via the Cameroon Mountains. Although there were sporadic conflicts throughout their shared history, the Jukun and Idoma lived in harmony with the early Tiv settlers. The Tiv people have a legend about a common ancestor named Tiv who had two sons, Chongo and Pusu. All Tivs trace their ancestry back to these familial origins, which are the central figures in the Tiv tradition. In the past, TV communities flourished in places without a centralized government, where farming and hunting constituted their way of life. However, the introduction of colonialists in the 20th century brought about change. To bring Tiv communities together and make their administration easier, the Tor Tiv stool was created in 1946. The Tiv Traditional Council is headed by the Tor Tiv, also referred to as Begha U Tiv or the Lion of Tiv People, and they are from Gboko, Benue state. There have been five Tor Tiv since its founding. Gondo Aluor, Tor Tiv Il, as seen in 1958. James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse is the Tor Tiv V currently holding office, carrying on the Tiv people’s tradition of unity and leadership.

The Super Eagles, a formidable team, defeated Bulgaria in the 1994 USA FIFA World Cup to win their first title thirty years ago.Amokachi scored the second goal, Rashidi Yekini scored the first, and Amunike scored the third. One of six groups consisting of four teams competing at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States was Group D. June 21, 1994, was the date of the first match, and June 30, 1994, was the date of the simultaneous final games. Argentina, Greece, Nigeria, and Bulgaria made up the group. Argentina qualified as one of the top three teams, Bulgaria placed second after defeating Argentina in the group stage, and Nigeria won the group on goal differential. Argentina and Bulgaria had faced off in the group stage back in 1962; neither team made it to the knockout round. Argentina and Bulgaria faced each other in 1986 as well; both teams made it to the knockout round. The conclusion of Diego Maradona’s international career made Group D noteworthy as well. When Maradona, the captain of Argentina and their star player, underwent an anti-doping test during their match against Nigeria, it was discovered that ephedrine, a stimulant that enhances performance, was present in his system. Argentina lost their last group game against Bulgaria without him, and they were eliminated by Romania in the Round of 16. Maradona’s lone goal for Argentina in the competition against Greece would turn out to be his last.  Italy later eliminated Nigeria in the round of 16, thanks to a famous goal by Roberto Baggio.

Onoyom Iya Nya, a wealthy trader who converted to Christianity through Mary Mitchell Slessor’s influence, first constructed a church in 1905. But in 1906, the original church was flooded. As the hub of a new community on higher ground, Onoyam Iya Nya constructed a new church and gave the area the name  Obio Usiere, or “Town of the Dawn.”
